Game variants like capture the flag, king of the hill, and team deathmatch are a real blast no matter how many players are in a game. Delta Force is a very impressive game overall, despite the limitations of the graphics engine and the multiplayer flaws.

The guys at Novalogic put their Voxel engine to good use.

If there's one thing you'll notice in Delta Force, it's the endless real-estate at your disposal. Say what you will of NovaLogic, but their patented Voxel engine is quite capable of offering a virtually limitless playing field, with literally countless square miles stretching as far as the eye can see.

A lot of empty space out there.

Gameplay is half military simulator, half arcade shoot 'em up, whereby your special forces persona gets tossed into very large combat zones and has to do battle with limited weaponry and hitpoints. Campaigns go about through several hot-spots in Asia, Africa, Indonesia, South America and a few other places, with missions encompassing clear-and-destroy, demolition, convoy takedowns or data retrieval jobs. All of these assignments of course take place in outdoor areas, depicting natural landscapes with respectable detail. Lines of sight are realistic and the impact to system performance is reasonable.

Gameplay and mission design tries as much to simulate real combat, but this is altogether quite a conventional first-person action game with a few ‘sim' trappings. For one thing, you can only carry one of several semi-realistic small arms – such as an M4 assault rifle with an attached M203, a suppressed MP5 for stealth operations, an M249 heavy support weapon or a couple of sniper rifles that differ in caliber size. Because of the nature of the engine, those weapons that let you scope targets from afar will always have the upper hand, rendering such weapons as the M249 or MP5 quite useless.

The stealth-oriented MP5, which could have made for some exciting midnight raids against unwary terrorists, is pointless to use because of the AI's tendency to spot you from miles away, be it day or night. The M4 is the all-purpose assault rifle that fits every bill – its scope lets you shoot targets from afar while a burst feature makes it deadly in tight spots as well, and the grenade launcher can literally bring the house down. Other specialized equipment includes an M72 LAW launcher, perfect against armored threats, frag grenades and remote-detonated satchel charges.

Beside the weapons, there are a few other things grounding this shooter in reality, but only barely. There's a thinly veiled team element to gameplay, but it's one that isn't half as solid as it could have been. Instead of accompanying you into combat zones under your direct command (as in Rainbow Six), team members are scrambled around an objective and handed pre-designated waypoints during an assault. So as you attack from the south, another lone guy might attack from the east, and another from the west. Probably not how the military handles this stuff in real life.

The player assumes the role of a Delta Force operative who takes part in military operations in various theatres. Objectives typically involve the elimination of a hostile presence in a region, assassinating a high-profile target, destroying military equipment or escorting POWs or civilians to an extraction point. Depending on the mission the player also needs to make it to an extraction point himself after fulfilling all other objectives. All five campaigns are available from the get-go and additional missions are unlocked as previous ones are completed. Sometimes multiple missions are unlocked at once and it is up to the player which order to play them in. The game features 40 missions in total.

Equipment[edit]

Before each mission the player is able to choose his equipment. Default loadouts differ from mission to mission but the player can exchange it without any restrictions. The inventory is based on three slots: one for the main weapon, one for extra equipment and one for a sidearm.

Multiplayer[edit]

Delta Force also features LAN and online multiplayer for up to 32 players. All missions from the singleplayer campaign can be played cooperatively with additional players replacing the AI-controlled Delta Force operatives. Additionally deathmatch, king of the hill and capture the flag are available, along with team variations.

Development[edit]

Delta Force uses NovaLogic's own proprietary Voxel Space engine, known from their earlier games such as the Comanche series, which uses voxels to visualise terrain while polygons are used for rendering characters, vehicles, buildings and other details.^[2] This method allowed for draw distances and terrain detail unseen in first person shooters at the time and supported the game's attempt to simulate realistic outdoor combat at distances of up to several hundred meters. A limitation of the engine was that it did not support any form of 3D acceleration.

Reception[edit]

Next Generation reviewed the PC version of the game, rating it three stars out of five, and stated that 'Though Delta Force's standalone play is often uninspired, the multiplayer is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences available today.'^[10]

This policy also allows for an unfinished mirroring operation to be completed if it was interrupted when you undocked the notebook. If you undock the computer while using the docking station recovery drive, all new or revised data on the primary HDD is automatically copied to the recovery HDD when the notebook is re-docked. The game received 'favorable' reviews according to video game review aggregatorGameRankings.^[3] GameSpot's Michael Ryan awarded the game 9.1 out of 10, calling it 'a very impressive game overall', particularly praising the game's mission and sound design, albeit pointing out its outdated visuals.^[14] He also drew comparisons to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, released earlier the same year, but noted Delta Force's limited preparation options compared to the latter. PC Gamer Online's Todd Vaughn awarded the game 89%, also drawing comparisons to Rainbow Six but noting Delta Force's focus on long-distance fights and lower level of realism. He concluded: 'Overall, Delta Force is a surprising and welcome addition to the genre that uses just the right mix [of] action and tactics to set itself apart from the crowd.'^[12]

Sequels[edit]

The game was successful enough to receive a direct sequel, Delta Force 2, the following year and spawn a long-running series. The latest game in the series is Delta Force: Xtreme 2, released in 2009. Another game titled Delta Force: Angel Falls was announced but never released due to NovaLogic's closure in 2016.

Inspired by the popularity of Ridley Scott's war film Black Hawk Down, chronicling the Battle of Mogadishu, NovaLogic developed a Delta Force game with the same theme titled Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, which was released in 2003. Due to the rise in popularity of military-themed multiplayer shooters with vehicular combat, most notably DICE'sBattlefield series, NovaLogic also developed a multiplayer focused spin-off of the Delta Force series titled Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising, released in 2004.
